BC Forest Fires: Waiting for the Rain
Last night I heard from my Mom who is worried about the BC forest fires and the extreme dryness. She is experiencing it first hand up in Revelstoke, BC although the fire is not in her immediate area at this time. I heard on the radio this morning that rain is not expected until Monday in Victoria. Hopefully it will come soon and bring some relief to BC. I know everyone was hoping for rain sooner. She writes,
We are lucky so far, the nearest fire is at Galena Bay, which you know is the ferry destination on the Nakusp side of the lake. However the smoke is just terrible and the Firecats and the spotter planes are flying constantly. I don’t know if you remember but when they take off from the airport they fly upriver and then rise and come up over the bluff (right over our house every time) Danny has given up barking at them which is a relief. The planes are noise enough. There are plenty of helicopters up there too but they get a little altitude by the time they get here.
It is cooler today and we had a few spots of rain, of course the big fear is more thunder storms. You would not believe how dried out countryside is, I cannot remember it ever being this bad. I’m glad we have air conditioning and that I don’t have to open windows, but the house still smells sort of like bacon. It’d really weird, you can’t see any mountains and sometimes there is discernable smoke between the house and the back garden shed. I took advantage of the bit of rain washing the air and got the grass cut, but needless to say we are not spending much time in the great outdoors.
