Not Surprised by Putin’s Threat
I am not surprised about Putin’s stance on a Western Missile Defense system for Europe. Bush is getting on just about everyone’s last nerve these days.
The CBC reports,
The majority of Canadians are against Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) anyways.
In 2005 the Washington Post reported,
BMD will consume vast amounts of taxpayer resources and will force all the superpowers to engage in military build up’s to perceived superiority. This is the real danger because the most logical and intelligent form of attack would be much more covert than firing a missile from one country at another. It’s a lot harder to hide who delivered the attack and a country risks having the rest of the world gang up on them if they choose this route. A bad idea…its time to let it lie.
Better to spend time and money on global relationship building, resourcing and improving intelligence services.

Note this memo from Harper’s office.
“Russia has WMDs that can hit anywhere in the North American continent in no more than forty-five minutes. Canada’s new government will not ensure that the North American continent will be targeted by weapons of mass destruction.”

Well there is really never going to be a winnner here. The really sad thing is we should be a lot farther along in being able to get along peacefully at this point in our history. Things are really going backwards, not progressively forward.

As much as I am not a fan of Putin (not a big fan of his autocratic ways and his thuggery), and as much as I loathe nuclear proliferation of any sort, I can see where he’s coming from. In fact, I’ve thought for awhile that this would happen.
There was relative stability on the nuclear issue until Bush had to pursue missile defense. My feeling is that we’re at the dawn of a new arms race, and it’s Bush’s doing.

Well wasn’t Bush just yappy today about all the democracy Russia has lost. I don’t think lectures from a guy whose adminstration jails people with no trial (and tortures) is really the role model you want making this particular point to Putin. And of course who can forget attacking countries (with no provocation) with fraudulently manufactured evidence…I could go on here : ))
