No Right to A GST Cut with Zero Action on Kyoto

Well I am less than pleased with my new GST cut. Is it supposed to make me feel better about the prices I am paying today? Canadians still have no action on child care, the environment and poverty. This GST cut is a large part of the problem.

Personally, I am still burning from the fact that retailers have begun to remove the US prices from books, cards, etc. so we can’t tell how much we are paying anymore in comparison to the Americans. I was shocked to visit the stores just before Christmas and see how many new books no longer had both prices. They are making it so I don’t even have the right to complain anymore because I don’t have the information. Is this so I’ll ooh and awww all over the new tax cut? Cause I don’t know how bad I am getting hosed on the other end? How am I supposed to care about a penny when there is such a large price disparity between our goods and theirs? It is all just an elaborate smoke show anyways. Infuriating.

  1. Mound of Sound Says:

I rather expect that this is the art of “defunding” government that’s been practised at such cost in the US. Empty the treasury and then say there’s no money when the need arises to implement new programmes. As for Kyoto, you might as well forget about it. To the extent Harper acts at all it will be to introduce measures that are as punitive to the electorate as possible. He wants to lead public opinion against responsible, remedial action if only to preserve the windfall promise of the Tar Sands.

  2. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Exactly what the US has done MOS and to see us traveling down the same path makes me furious. Forget responsibility. Live it up today and leave nothing for the kids. I mean who cares as long as we are getting rich and living well. Just disgusting.

  3. wendy Says:

I totally agree.Heres to a Liberal 2oo8!Speaking Liberal,Ken Dryden will be here Jan.16!A more detailed Email comming from Anne Park Shannon!Wanna go?

  4. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Yes I got an email too wendy. The only thing is I have class early Wed pm’s starting again in Jan. It really depends on what time. I am hoping for an early evening/evening thing and then I can go. Will definitely go though. Ken’s such a wonderful speaker. I hear he is going to talk about early learning and child care as well so I don’t want to miss it.

  5. Gainsayer Says:

I think we should make your blog mandatory reading for prospective immigrants so they get a full understanding of what they are getting themselves into.

Immigrants deserve to know that the average Canadian feminist want to hike taxes so badly that they take extreme personal offense to a tax cut. What sane person would want to conduct business and raise a family in such an environment?

BTW, I could’ve written a nice polite comment containing facts and arguments in support of the GST cut instead of the catty comment above, but why bother? 100% certainty I would have been called “stupid” or “crazy” for my efforts, that’s how it works when you take the time to make a polite, well researched comment at a Progressive blog. What a squandered opportunity.

  6. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Maybe immigrants care as much about child care, the environment and the poor as I do. You never know eh? I am for continued income tax cuts particularly for the poorest Canadians. Nothing like a Con policy supporter whose government has done nothing for women, commenting on how important the GST is over child care and the environment. But then we know Con priorities are for the rich and well off anyways.

  7. ian Says:

I would prefer to have a few extra dollars in my pocket than the quagmire that is government programs.
When you evaluate the purchase of a book why do you need to gauge it against what an American pays? surely it is a case of “what is it worth to me”
As a lover of big government perhaps you should rally for US price stickers on everything you buy? after all books are one of the few that do that.
a former immigrant and now proud Canadian citizen.

  8. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

And someone who has nothing to gain from quality child care, doesn’t care about helping the poor or doesn’t give a fig about the environment/climate change…well I guess they would feel like you do ian. I don’t agree with that position at all. Who cares about anyone else as long as you think you got a penny off your coffee? I would argue that point as well though because I never noticed any difference in prices after the last GST drop. I strongly doubt I will see any difference this time either. What a joke. Who could with prices going sky high even as our dollar rises in value? As for not wanting to know the difference in cost and whether we are being ripped off…I guess I just can’t relate to your position of being thrilled with less information and living in the dark ian. I want to know how, why, where and when I am being screwed over.

  9. David Says:

Since you and a few others are displeased with lower taxes, I suggest that you send CRA a cheque to prove your displeasure. When it clears your account, post a confirmation of your “contribution” and I will consider sending an equal amount. If you can’t put up, then shut up. Higher taxes and more government will not improve daycare.

  10. Fiumara Says:

I must admit that your ideas, that are a carry over from the last century, still make me snicker. Imagine, trying to get the government to pay for your responsibilities and instructing new immigrants to learn your mooching ideology.

I think it’s time you learnt from immigrants (I am one myself) and try to look after yourself just as we do. Unlike you I plan on contributing to this country versus taking from this country as you do.

Once you’ve learnt the satisfaction of self-sufficiency then you would never again look to mooching off others’ hard work. Spend less time complaining and more time doing would be a great start.

  11. John Says:

The day they start up a national daycare is the day I drop into the underground economy and dwell evermore in he shadow of the peoples dominion.

Cut taxes enough and everyone will have the money they need to pay to raise their own kids on their own dime.

The environment will be best taken care of by empowering people with decent levels of prosperity through lower taxes and investment, then will all have fewer kids just like we do in Canada where we are prosperous. That will help the environment along with some new technology and the Left shutting up and letting us build some nuclear (or is that nucular) plants.

What was the last bitch .. oh ya .. poverty. We don’t have poverty in Canada. They have poverty in Africa. We have lazy stupid people whose job is exacting other peoples money from vote-hungry politicians. Poor people in Canada have cable TV and cars. Street people are not poor, they are drug addicts.

University students cry poor, but do most of that crying into a pitcher of beer at the local pub.

  12. philanthropist Says:

Our Conservative government is leading the world on environmental issues by moving beyond the small and ineffective Kyoto scheme, real environmentalists understand that while political activists refuse to.

Canadians who do not believe in GST cuts can simply send in a cheque worth 2% of their yearly spending, that will be between $600 and $1000 for most. That would mean putting your money where your mouth is for those Canadians – unless they are hypocrites.

  13. sheila brown Says:

What information do you have on Ken Dryden’s visit to Victoria other than the date. Where will he be speaking? I usually receive emails regarding any Libs. coming to Victoria, but have not as yet.

  14. BrainDrainXP Says:

You want to pay more taxes yet complain when Canadian retaillers make an honest buck (And therefore pay more tax themselves).

    Typical socialist.

  15. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Huh interesting….I have had a nice run on my site by a bunch of blogging tory bottom feeders thanks to SDA. It’s fine in small doses but I think someone would have to pay me if they want me to sort through the garbage I woke up to today. Quite funny actually. Find someone else to play with SDA I prefer posting to sorting through Conservative BS. It’s fine in small doses but this is overkill and I am not a free advertising space for mindless Conservative policies.

  16. Jay-mo Says:

    What an ignorant comment.
“I am for continued income tax cuts particularly for the poorest Canadians.”
Guess what, the poorest Canadians dont pay any income tax. I used to be in that category, didnt pay any income tax, in fact, I got more back then I paid. Now i make a better living and am paying a good chunk of tax.
If one is already in a non-taxed income bracket how else can you offer them tax relief then by reducing a consumption sales tax like the gst?

  17. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Wow your brilliant Jay-mo. I have many friends who make about 13-14 bucks an hour and they still pay plenty of tax. Guess you know it all huh?

  18. Jay-mo Says:

Yes, I actually do know it all. What’s your argument?
That people who make $25-30,000/year pay income tax? They sure do.
Are these the “poorest Canadians”? They’re definetly not.
Will your 13-14 buck an hour friends keep money in their pockets with another gst cut? They definetly will.

  19. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

They won’t see a dime just like I didn’t after the last cut. These people aren’t buying new cars and houses where they might see some advantage from a GST cut….they are just getting by. Try living in a big city on that wage. They need income tax relief not 1 penny off a dumb coffee.

  20. mushroom Says:

One cent for a cup of coffee is also one cent for my toothpaste and deodorant. It helps. But does the GST rebate cover this, hmmmm?

BTW, the income tax rate for the lowest income tax bracket went down from 15.5 to 15 per cent. This is what Martin and Goodale proposed before the government fell. Jim Flaherty owes the Grits a big thank you for making him see the light. Dion is expecting a card at this very moment.

Jay-mo, if you want to be bold, why don’t you exempt families earning less than $30,000 from paying tax at all? Don’t say a $100 a month for daycare and an increase in the child tax credit from Flaherty’s last budget are enough. They need to be increased substantially and Dion’s war on poverty will address it.

  21. Boots Says:

I guarantee you… if the goverment RAISED the GST, you’d be crying about the poor people paying a penny more for their coffee.

  22. Oldschool Says:

It was an election promise folks . . . . they kept it . . . so unusual for “progressives” to understand!!!
Fact is . . . taxes . . . in Canada are WAY TOO HIGH!!!
    Personal exemptions have been increased . . . . need to be increased much more . . . . corporate rates way too high . . . corporations leaving . . . .
I would like to see my taxes halved!!! Then . . . . downsize govt to fit the tax revenue . . . . get govt out of broadcasting, airlines and so on.
If the govt does something for you it costs many times more . . . and usually works poorly . . .ei: CBC, Air Canada!!!

    A few quotes from RR:
“The most terrifying words in the English language are: I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”

“The taxpayer: That’s someone who works for the federal government but doesn’t take the civil service exam.”

“Government is like a baby: An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.”

“It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession. I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first. Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.”

  23. spike 1 Says:

The GST is the only tax that the poor in this country pay besides PST’s in various provinces. The thing that I hear is the SOWS are complaining that their swill trough is not being filled.

  24. mushroom Says:

    Oldschool,

The fact is Air Canada is now owned by Onex. CBC sustains itself by selling adverts on its most popular show: Hockey Night in Canada.

Ask the Prime Minister if he wants to kill off the CBC by letting HNIC go to Rogers or the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan.

  25. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Yah I knew the income tax drop for the under 30 grand folks was the Libs idea mushroom. Helping the lowest income is not a Con priority its a Lib priority. I think this group should continue to receive tax cuts as we can afford them and Kyoto targets must be addressed immediately (the priority) considering some reports (e.g. this article from CanWest) have the arctic ice cap completely melted in summer by as early as 2010-11.

Hello once again OS and Happy New Year. Of course I still don’t agree with this or anything you have ever said on this blog but perhaps the New Year will be different. One can always hope.

  26. MJH Says:

This is a sick blog when you pick and choose and publish only those comments you agree with.

  27. Scott Tribe Says:

One thing that can be said for SDA: Anytime Kate sees something on a blog she fulminates over, it’s sure to get a big increase in traffic, and a big decrease in intelligence, both due to her membership.

I expect Dr. Dawg’s blogpost on her latest rantings should get the same result over there.

  28. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Yah well the problem is with the comments it generates. I don’t mind answering a couple comments even a few a day but I have a life and refuse to answer each one if a group decides to swarm my site. I could see if I was getting paid but I do it for fun and I have a family, work, new posts to write, scrabble on facebook : )) etc. The other issue is my wordpress comment system. If I let one comment go through by a tory troll for example they can continue to comment unedited from then on. I refuse to a a venue for most of that garbage. Anyways I have my partner looking for a comment plug in with more flexibility (e.g can let a comment through but still have the option to moderate each additional comment in the future)… until then the few I have let through are enough hassle for me …e.g my old friend OS. Any ideas on a good plug in if you know of one…I would be thrilled Scott.

  29. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

So far it looks like I would have to moderate every comment made as the other option.

  30. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

It is a sick blog MJH. Now I have to moderate every commenter thanks to a bunch of blogging bories. Just peachy.

  31. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

    Boots……
Well as a Liberal and a strong believer in equal attention being paid to debt repayment, cutting taxes and social programs (e.g. health care, home care for seniours, child care, cities, etc), its true I prefer that tax cuts were directed to the under 30 grand folks in income tax cuts..they desperately need it . This group does not consume like the highest income group so they don’t benefit as much from a GST cut…they just can’t afford to buy and benefit like the 100 grand a year crowd….go figure.

As this Con government doesn’t believe in any social programs (save maybe pet projects of the REAL women group)..I disagree with their budgets. Hence my intense dislike for their policies. Which is what inspired this post and my belief that it shouldn’t have happened until we had concrete action on Kyoto, child care, etc. Maybe one day we would have been in a position to make a GST cut a priority and great then it works…. but I don’t believe we are there now…not at all.

  32. Meesh Says:

Why do you have to moderate all comments?
If the comments are so boring/stupid, won’t they reveal themselves as such?

  33. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Besides your being an a** Spike1 I think my idea of poor and your idea of poor might be quite different because the under 30 grand a year folks pay plenty of taxes. It’s funny you Cons don’t seem to mind the subsidies to the billion dollar big oil/energy industry though. Can we say hypocrites?

  34. odie441 Says:

When the first 1% cut to the GST was announced, one of the local channels in Ottawa had asked for volunteers for an experiment. It was a six month experiment, that included the three months leading up to the GST reduction (GST = 7%) and three months following the GST cut (GST =6%). The families that they followed had combined earnings of around 55,000 per year. The families tracked their spending on everything that they paid GST on for the first three months at 7%. Then they did the same thing for the three month period post GST cut to 6%. The families noticed that there was savings because GST applies to everything we purchase/use in daily life. I remember the one family saved 157.00 over three months just on their daily purchases. If the three month period can be calculated as a mean average, that is a potential for 628.00 dollars of savings for a 12 month period, or roughly 52.00 dollars per month. I agree that lower income families will not save as mh as these families that were used in this experiment, but the will save something on their day to day purchases. If it is only 20 dollars a month, that is still a potential savings of 240.00 dollars per year.

  35. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Well Meesh it’s probably my own problem but an a** backward comment on my site (see multiple above comments) requires a response. I mentioned several times I have a backlog thanks to a SDA snit and I still have over 30 to go through. I am finished for now though. I won’t finish tonight.

Note: The one comment I just briefly looked at that called me a broad though…its not getting through : ))

  36. mushroom Says:

    Mile 0,

I am tempted to install haloscan in my blog (hope it works for you). I am losing traffic due to comment moderation. No tolerance for free speech that does not fit under the reasonable limits section of the Canadian Charter of Rights.

  37. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

David……… it’s my site and I won’t shut up. Are you also planning to pay for the guy/girl who follows me around while I’m about town keeping track of my purchases/life and how many pennies should go back to CRA? After all why should I pay for it/do it when the government should have done it considering they say they are not pulling out of the Kyoto treaty? Obviously to keep our end of the deal will require investment and changes or we are violating the agreement. If the governments willing to put up the money for someone to this for me a couple hours a week, and the accounting to boot…well I’ll consider it. However, first you’ll have to force the Cons to actually do something about Kyoto. They won’t get an extra cent of my money to continue to subsidize big oil/energy companies.

  38. Old engineer Says:

What subsidies (be specific) does Big Oil[tm] receive that -
    a) Aren’t received by non-energy-producing industrial corporations;
    b) Weren’t initiated by Liberal governments;
    c) Are more significant relative to cash flow than the vast sums fed to Bombadier and its precursor companies by Liberal governments?

In the same vein, how much MORE has the current government already wasted on the Kyoto scam than assorted Liberal governments peed away for the same cause in the previous 10 years, and why doesn’t that make you love Harper more than Dion? I despise them both for their shared technophobia, scientific illiteracy and/or political opportunism.

  39. Old engineer Says:

I should have mentioned that this engineer doesn’t work for, and never has worked for, an oil or coal company, so you can save yourself the trouble of making an ad hominem put-down.

  40. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Let’s see old engineer, subsidies to big oil with no carbon tax system is just nuts when the arctic ice cap melting in as soon as 5 years. In addition…if we want to discuss the Cons, subsidizing Quebec business look no further than this post I wrote last spring. I have met Dion and I certainly don’t despise him so I am not sure I can relate to your position at all except for maybe the Harper despise thing and I don’t really think despise is the right word…really disappointed maybe?

  41. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

ahh I also found an old post on the spring budget Conservative Big Oil/energy subsidies old engineer. Good to reminisce : ))

  42. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

I don’t believe it is halo scan with wordpress. You are using blogger though right mushroom?

  43. Paul Says:

In my 10 years’ experience with managing a mailing list, responding to every second or third post (that you don’t agree with and that everyone else sees) is not good model behaviour for a moderator.

It makes you appear to be on the defensive and effectively cuts-off your supporters since you’ve already set the tone for them to follow and they may not want to post non-thinking ‘me too’ replies.

On the other hand, some “blogs” are ego-driven and do not cultivate discussion from the readers.

Do you have any real-world ideas about taxes and how they should work? I’m asking about simplicity for the average working Canadian, not the mess we have now.

    All the best.

  44. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Thanks for the opinion on how to run my blog Paul but I actually don’t really care if a bunch of blogging tories/SDA fans are regular readers are not. I don’t particularly agree with any of their opinions so it is hard to have a discussion when there is zero common ground. As for taxes….do I look like a tax accountant? Where does it say on my profile that I do taxes for a living or it’s what I study? I manage to complete my taxes every year on my own but I don’t care for it….. much just like most people. I’ll complain about this government and their tax decisions if I want to. I do listen to friends who make low wages and pay taxes though and they complain they pay too much tax making it very difficult to live in this city.
Simplicity to me is cutting income taxes not consumption taxes like the GST. We all need to either consume a lot less (e.g. oil/energy) or consume a lot smarter in the future if this planet is to remain healthy.

I’m off to work now though…I’ll try to moderate a few more in the backlog this evening. I only have so much time. Eventually I will get there. Slow and steady wins the race.

  45. spike 1 Says:

woman at mile zero; When I hear you and all the other doom and gloomers predict no arctic ice in 5 years then I would think that you are taking the threat seriously. If you are then I would like YOU and your ilk to be the driving force behind shutting down the CNE,professional baseball, the NHL,the arts etc and all other reasons for people to use vehicles to attend non essential events. Also electricity should be rationed to two or three days a week in large cities and all citizens of those cities should have to grow 50% of their own food because of the energy required to get it to the stores and then the customer.Importing food from off shore should be banned. If things are as bad as you say they are then kyoto wont save us,but YOU can.I wont comment on the income tax post but try buying a farm someday and paying for it with after tax money.

  46. chillin in MB Says:

    Right on #22 MJH.
This is a sick Liberal site. Totally one sided and if you disagree with the “Dion sheep” your comments are not published.
A Blog of blithering, whining idiots. Get A LIFE!!

  47. Friend of USA Says:

I knew no one would reply or could reply to this,

Will someone explain to me what is so great about signing Kyoto when the Liberals did sign it but then let our co2 emission rise by 30 % when the promise was to lower them by 6%?

And if Harper was to sign a Kyoto or Bali or whatever accord and was to do the same as the liberals – let co2 rise by another 30% – would you all give him a pass as you give the liberals?

  48. Em Says:

The CRAP legions are always gearing up for an election, eh?And especially early in the new year.

I visit your blog regularly and have never commented until now. I just want you to know that today’s commentors ARE trolls since they would never empathasize with any of your/my positions on the need for government support for families, children, etc. No, their MPs merely use their free mailings to insist the following:

“All parents worry about their children. Your Conservative Government does too. That’s why we are cracking down on sexual predators. For far too long predators have been able to go after our children.”

More comprehensive support for childcare, you say? Not. It’s always about law and order, not hope and love. That’s why retired teachers like me have difficulty voting for the ‘New’ Government.

  49. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Well I am not sure what you are reading chillin in MB but Old Engineer, Boots, Jay-Mo, Old School, Gainsayer, David, ian and a few others didn’t agree with me. I’m working through the backlog but in my time not yours. Eventually I’ll get there. I”ll do a few more responses to comments tonight but I had to post first. I still have at least 30 to go through though.

  50. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

I hear ya Em and it’s good to hear a positive comment. Thanks for visiting and posting it.

  51. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Sorry SB lost your comment asking about the Dryden event meeting time and place in a tory troll hissy fit. I will post it here when I hear of it. I still do not know.

Your comment Flumara doesn’t make me snicker it makes me sad. Sad that you think a country should care about it’s citizens enough to try treat them fairly. Sad that you think a great country shouldn’t try to help those who need it most a hand (e.g. single mothers who work and need child care). At least that what I am getting out of your comment. Who suffers most from global warming? The poor worldwide. Who suffers when the government unfairly favours tax relief for the rich and those who consume the most and not the working poor? Low income Canadians.

  52. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Seeing as how I think the underground economy is probably not paying any taxes and therefore is illegal it seems that some Cons are quite as law and orderly oriented as we all though eh John?

Don’t let the door hit ya on the way down ; )

  53. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

oh jontaylor from jontaylor.ca where should I start? Oh yah nowhere because I don’t publish comments from people who call me lazy on my own blog. It’s rude and it’s my site…the socialist part well ok you can call me that but I have taken tests and I am considered only about 35-40 percent socialist…so less than some : )

There is another comment in here from you as well but I am not there yet. Workin away….

  54. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Actually philanthropist…our Conservative government has embarrassed the whole country by actively working to sabotage world climate change agreements since they came to power. Wakey Wakey it’s one of my favourite topics : )
The Cons say they won’t pull out of Kyoto. They are in. But now we hear there is no money because of this additional GST cut…so sorry environment ….but you lose. You peak of hypocrites…in my opinion, the Cons stance is not only hypocritical but also highly deceptive.
It’s a collective responsibility, we all use the planet’s resources. No one… including you philanthropist… should get away without paying to ensure it remains in good shape for our children.
I am finished moderating and responding to Tory Troll comments for tonight. I can only do so many and more have been added. I will do some more tomorrow though. I am off though to spend time with my partner.

  55. JJ Says:

Ugh, you got an SDA swarm. I must say, you have more patience than I do for those cretins.

  56. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Well it hasn’t been much fun at all JJ but I am just working at it slow and steady. I like posting more than reading and answering this garbage so it is not a top priority. If it takes me a long time to answer them all…so be it. I still have 35 in the backlog : (( ( some are just name calling though and they won’t get the time of day. I have been working pretty hard at it each night since it happened. I am getting tired of it though.

  57. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Friend of USA…as I have stated before on this blog before…wish I knew where because I could have copied and pasted it just for you. Emissions finally started to reduce in 2005 under the Liberals environment polices. I believe we could have met our Kyoto targets just like Europe has if we had continued with progressive reductions. Unfortunately the Cons have reversed all progress and eliminated those programs and policies since their election two years ago. I agree the Libs policies were not nearly strict enough and more could and should have been done. I also believe it would have been helpful if the Cons had not always tried to make it into a “force reductions in emissions on us and your against Albertans” issue year after year. It’s not true of course but as you can see even with all the consensus on the science behind climate change and unanimous world agreement on the problem….30% of Canadians seem to uninformed or deliberately turning a blind eye to the melting ice cap problem. These Canadians agree with the Cons and spout that Kyoto is a socialist scheme. At least that what the polls show. I certainly can’t see anyone voting for Cons who believes in real science.

  58. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Not sure how pro sports comes into this Spike1. Your post doesn’t make a lot of sense to me but I disagree with the shutting down pro sports piece. I think everyone should be able to afford/have access to purchasing an electric vehicle to drive to that event though. And the stadiums they take place in should use green technologies for power. I agree with your 100 mile diet plan preferences…great thinking.

  59. Woman at Mile 0 Says:

Huh you don’t say Odie441 …..the news show did all that? Cause I am wondering if this news show also calculated all the costs of the Con policy mistakes that have increased prices we pay everyday (e.g subsidies for ethanol increasing food prices, lack of affordable child care so parents can work, greenhouse gases rising and no action from government, etc). What do you think is the cost of these mistakes? I am betting they are pretty high. Seems for every positive there’s a big negative for a whole lot of people. I guess it just depends which way they want to slant a story.
