On Online Dating
I was reading this article at CanWest about online dating and how it can be as frustrating as the bar scene for women.
Having met my partner through the Internet way back in the 1990’s, I can relate to some of the negatives of online relationships, but overall found it to be a positive, helpful way to meet someone new. We didn’t meet through online dating though, instead we met through a chat room in Internet Relay Chat (IRC). I was visiting a room on a regular basis for about a month to chat with fellow Canadians and as a room operator (someone who can throw you out of the room) he completely ignored me.
About a month later, after a very interesting chat one day with the room’s owner (different person), he decided to make me a room operator too but even then my future partner wouldn’t say “boo” to me. He continued happily chatting with many other room regulars/visitors. For some reason I seemed to find this aloofness quite interesting, so I private messaged him and inquired if he was stuck-up because he would not say “hi” to me. Perhaps it was overly rude, but it definitely got his attention. From that day forward we spent a great deal of time together (online and by phone) until we met about a month later in real life. This January will be the 10th anniversary of our online meeting date. How time flies.
I realize this post confirms I am a total computer geek. Very sad.

Check out this article in the Star today. It seems I am not the only one who feels like a total puter geek when I tell people how we met.
